Exquisite Corpse

In one of my english classes one year, we were learning about poetry and we did an activity where we passed around a piece of paper and wrote one line of poetry. The idea was that you could only see the one line ahead of yours and at the end we put them all together to create one large poem. I thought it was really cool and I still have the one my class did. Here it is:

How can the Mediterranean sink

Mermaids singing sad songs swimming through the darkness

Seagulls flying overhead in the cool breeze

Sand squishing between my toes as I look out to the blue green sea

the seagull swooped down and took a bite out of me

The turtledoves were gracious enough to spare me

As I sit here gripping the gravel beneath me

Impossible to breathe please release me

It’s as simple as exhaling a simple explanation

This leads the body to shout and stutter

Gazing at that thing

Dangling in the window glistening and glittering like a

Firefly oh how bright it is it reminds me of my

Favorite star I gaze upon when I’m thinking of

A bug crawling complacently in my beard

Tt sleeps stays and is my friend

One never knows what’s just around the bend

Not even if it’s what pops into your head

It’s the thought that can keep you up at night in bed

Thinking how do the beavers really chew away at all that wood

But of course of course no other reason for those

Did God give us such highs and lows and the ability to take all the blows
